General Description This charismatic Herreshoff H-28 was originally constructed by her current Owner, a Master Carpenter, to the exacting plans of Francis Herreshoff. Built in the Bahamas in 1964 she has been a much loved & appreciated member of the family ever since that has been continually updated. In the 1960’s she proved her capability when she took 28 days to sail across the Atlantic from the Caribbean to the UK where she has been based ever since. Built of mahogany strip planking on a timber frame & sheathed in fibreglass to provide a waterproof structure & painted, this H-28 is ketch rigged with a long keel. She has beautiful lines with wide open side decks & a generous cockpit. Down below her cabin is extremely light, with numerous port holes & windows & her wooden construction is evident giving a warm yet extremely solid feel. She has 6 berths, a twin burner stove & marine toilet. She also has a Yanmar 2GM20 diesel engine that was new in 2001 & comes with a set of North Sails that are in excellent condition. Ballast keel secured with Bronze Keel Bolts & a Timber Rudder Blade (Painted Navy Blue) connected to a varnished Tiller Brokers Description Odette is a superb version of the very popular Herreshoff H-28 that was originally designed in the USA by the renown Francis Herreshoff who offered the detailed plans for yard or home build. Such was the quality of the design that hundreds of these vessels were built with many examples still sailing today. Construction of this particular boat was completed by its current Owner ( a master Carpenter ) in the Bahamas in 1964, who has continued to sail it with his family ever since. As proof of its rugged and solid build quality, in the 1960’s, she was sailed across the Atlantic from the Bahamas to the UK, a journey that took 28 days. Since that time, the family have continually updated her including a new engine in 2001, complete new rig in 2008 and a suite of new sails in 2010 as well as regular painting of her hull & deck & general maintenance & she is rested ashore for upto 6 months every year. Although she is of mahogany plank construction, she is sheathed in GRP to provide a waterproof coating & reduced maintenance, however, she has not lost the warmth & feel of the traditional wooden boat that she truly is. Below Decks, she is light & bright due to her numerous portholes & windows & has a few basic comforts including toilet & small galley. She has the ability to sleep 6 utilising the 2 settees, forepeak & quarter berths & her current Owners have spent weeks together on sailing adventures near & far.
Sadly for the family, the time has now come to pass Odette on to her next caring Owner. She is just waiting for a new family to love her appreciate her & create new adventures with her, as the Owners of the past 50 years have done. She is currently lying afloat in Southampton & viewing can be arranged through Aspire Boat Sales.
